Bring the ultimate taste of autumn traditions right to your garden with our Sugar Pie Pumpkins. A beloved New England heirloom classic, this variety produces beautiful, uniform, round pumpkins that develop a rich, deep orange skin and a sturdy, dark green stem. Growing to a perfectly manageable size of about 4 to 6 pounds each, they are widely celebrated as the absolute gold standard for baking because of their thick, sweet, fine-grained, and bright orange flesh.

Whether you are looking to create a classic backyard pumpkin patch with your family or grow highly sought-after, premium roasting pumpkins for the local market, Sugar Pie grows reliably and beautifully. They look fantastic decorating your front porch in October and taste even better when brought into the kitchen for scratch-made autumn recipes.

Quick Growing Facts

  • Plant Type: Warm-Season Vining Winter Squash

  • Fruit Weight: 4 to 6 pounds

  • Vine Length: 6 to 8 feet (Vining habit)

  • Days to Harvest: 90 to 100 days

  • Sunlight Requirements: Full Sun (Absolutely essential for ripening fruit and turning skin a deep orange)

  • Hardiness Zones: 3 through 11 (Thrives easily as a summer crop across the entire United States)

Planting & Care Guide

  • When to Plant: Direct-sow seeds outdoors directly into the warm soil after all danger of spring frost has passed and soil temperatures reach 70°F. Pumpkins have sensitive root systems and do best when sown right into the ground. For areas with very short growing seasons, you can start them indoors in biodegradable peat pots 2–3 weeks before the last frost.

  • Seeding Depth: 1 inch deep. Plant 4 to 5 seeds together in raised mounds (or "hills") of loose, rich soil. Mounds naturally catch the sun's warmth and drain water perfectly, which pumpkin seedlings love. Seeds typically sprout in just 7 to 10 days.

  • Spacing: Space your planting mounds 4 to 6 feet apart. Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin each mound down to the strongest 2 or 3 plants so the vines have plenty of room to stretch out.

  • Watering: Maintain consistent, deep moisture, especially when the vines are flowering and setting fruit. Pumpkins are thirsty plants and need about 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Always water deeply at the base of the plant early in the morning, keeping the large leaves dry to prevent mildew.

  • Pro Gardening Tip: The secret to sweet, long-lasting baking pumpkins is all in the curing! Leave the pumpkins on the vine as long as possible until the skin is a hard, deep orange and the vine begins to wither. When harvesting, always cut the stem with sharp shears, leaving about 3 to 4 inches attached—never carry a pumpkin by its stem, as a broken stem causes the fruit to spoil quickly! Let the harvested pumpkins sit in a warm, sunny, dry spot for 10–14 days to cure. This thickens the skin for winter storage and concentrates the natural sugars, making the flesh incredibly sweet and flavorful.

Why You'll Love It

  • The Absolute King of Baking: Unlike stringy, watery carving pumpkins, Sugar Pie boasts a dense, smooth, completely stringless flesh that roasts into a velvety puree, perfect for authentic, scratch-made pies, breads, soups, and cheesecakes.

  • Perfect Kids' Gardening Project: Because the seeds are massive and easy to drop into mounds, and the vines grow rapidly with large yellow flowers, it is an incredibly fun, high-reward variety for children to track all summer long.

  • Long Winter Shelf Life: Once properly cured, these tough little pumpkins store beautifully in a cool, dark pantry or cellar for 3 to 5 months, keeping your kitchen stocked with homegrown food deep into winter.

  • Bountiful Autumn Decor: With their classic, smooth shapes and brilliant color, they serve as the perfect, charming autumn display for porch steps, centerpieces, and fall farm stands before making their way into the oven.
