Bring a fragrant, versatile, and deeply aromatic culinary masterpiece to your garden with our Common Thyme. A beloved heirloom staple that has anchored herb gardens for centuries, this rugged, low-growing perennial produces woody stems packed tight with tiny, clover-shaped, gray-green leaves. In mid-summer, it erupts in a beautiful haze of tiny pink and lavender blossoms. Celebrated for its rich, earthy, and subtly sweet peppery flavor, it is an absolute necessity for seasoned meats, slow-cooked stews, roasted vegetables, and classic savory stuffing.

Whether you are looking to create a fragrant living mulch between garden stepping stones, tuck an easy-care herb into patio container clusters, or plant an indispensable companion in your vegetable patch, Common Thyme grows beautifully year after year. It forms a dense, semi-evergreen mat that keeps weeds at bay while continuously welcoming local honeybees and native pollinators to your yard.

  • Hardiness Zones: 5 through 9 (Extremely rugged perennial that survives freezing winters and returns eagerly every spring)

Planting & Care Guide

  • When to Plant: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your region's last expected spring frost. Thyme seeds are exceptionally tiny and slow-growing at first, so starting them early indoors under lights gives them the best head start. Alternatively, surface-sow outdoors once the soil is completely warm in late spring.

  • Seeding Depth: Surface sow (Do not bury!). Gently press the dust-like seeds into the surface of a finely sifted, damp seed-starting mix. Common Thyme seeds require light to trigger germination. Mist very gently with a spray bottle so you don't wash the tiny seeds away.

  • Spacing: Thin or space individual plants about 8 to 12 inches apart. As they mature, they will spread out into a beautiful, dense, aromatic cushion.

  • Watering: Keep the soil lightly and evenly damp until they sprout (which requires a little patience and takes about 14–21 days). Once established, water very sparingly. Thyme is exceptionally drought-tolerant and hates sitting in soggy, wet soil. Allow the dirt to dry out completely between waterings.

  • Pro Gardening Tip: Give your thyme a mid-summer haircut! Once the plant finishes blooming in the summer, use garden snips to trim back the top one-third of the growth. This keeps the plant from becoming too woody or leggy, prevents the center from dying out, and aggressively forces the plant to push out a massive flush of tender, highly flavorful new green leaves before winter sets in.

Why You'll Love It

  • Incredible Drought & Heat Resilience: Once its roots find their home in the ground, Common Thyme thrives in hot, dry conditions and poor, sandy, or rocky soils where other plants completely wither.

  • Built-In Pest & Deer Shield: Because of the high concentration of aromatic oils in its tiny leaves, destructive garden pests, rabbits, and deer completely ignore it, making it a fantastic protective border for your valuable vegetables.

  • The Ultimate Kitchen Workhorse: Retaining its rich, earthy flavor exceptionally well when dried or frozen, it serves as a year-round gourmet foundation for scratch-made soups, roasted meats, artisan breads, and herbed butters.

  • A Living, Scented Pathway: When planted along walkways or between stepping stones, walking past it releases its sweet, earthy fragrance into the air, making your backyard transitions a sensory delight.
